Projecte Pilot

Alcoi

The project is a bold proposal for an innovative social housing block located in the historic center of Alcoi. The area is characterized by a sloping street profile and ancient, high-density buildings.

The competition, supported by the regional government, aimed to explore progressive living models for vulnerable sectors of society while implementing innovative and sustainable construction methods.

The proposal takes into account the site constraints and local regulations to maximize the number of dwellings, effectively addressing the different street and roof levels. The plot is located in the intersection of three different streets with a sloping profile terrain and wide views towards the northern side of the city.

The floor plan is configured using a regular structural grid, promoting repetition and efficiency. Each unit is conceived as a collection of interconnected spaces with similar proportions, providing maximum flexibility for residents.

Departing from the typical underground parking approach, a communal space was considered to accommodate various activities featuring a double-height space that allows for natural daylight and cross ventilation through opposing facades.

An atrium space is inserted to the neighbouring party wall providing access to all units. It works as a thermal regulator, enhancing natural ventilation throughout the year and capturing solar heat in winter.

The design celebrates the integration of local vernacular solutions, such as semi-open galleries and roller blinds known as "Persiana Alacantina." These elements enhance thermal comfort and natural ventilation throughout the seasons.

The structural strategy aims to create a flexible system capable of adapting to different scenarios, utilizing local manufacturers and skills.
